Dear Neighbor:

It has been my privilege to serve the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island for the last six years in the City Council. I have worked diligently on issues such as:

  • Transportation - I have led the fight to build the Second Avenue Subway; improve existing bus and subway service; save the M57’s 55th Street stops; and secure equivalent access to livery service for all disabled New Yorkers.

  • Education - While leading the battle to increase the Board of Education’s accountability, I successfully secured $12 million for the construction of a new East Side High School; a new beacon program and public library for Roosevelt Island; and millions of dollars for new computer centers, additional class space and other improvements in every school in my district.

  • Affordable Housing - I fought to protect our affordable housing stock through protecting rent regulation, securing funding for the creation of new units, and expanding enforcement with added HPD inspectors.

  • Quality of Life - I worked closely with local precincts to keep crime down; authored tough new laws to stiffen fines for noise violations; have worked to increase enforcement against bikes on the sidewalks; and served as a responsible voice against over development.

  • Urban Environment - I led the fight to increase funding for parks; secured millions of dollars to improve parks in my district; and sponsored legislation to ensure that New York purchases only sustainably grown wood.

  • Government Reform - I authored voter registration legislation which has resulted in tens of thousands of new voters; worked with thousands of constituents to ensure access to government programs; and fought to ensure that our tax dollars are spent wisely.

In addition, I have been a consistent supporter of LGBT rights and worked to expand women’s access to family planning services. I hope to have the opportunity to continue these efforts with your support.
