I have lived nearly all of my life in
Harlem and Washington Heights, where my wife and
I raised our three daughters. I know that our
communities have many needs. I believe that improving
education is the first step - to raising families
out of poverty and despair, to economic development
and affordable housing, to better health care,
to reducing crime and to protecting the environment.
So I began my commitment to our community 20 years
ago, first as a parent leader at PS/IS 187M and
then as a member of Community School Board 6.
I continued working for our children as the founder
and leader of the Campaign For Fiscal Equity,
a coalition creating real educational opportunity
for students in New York and around the country.
CFE and I sued the State of New York for failing
to properly fund NYC schools and we won! This
will bring billions of dollars to our schools
and renewed opportunity for our children and families.
My work as a labor leader and my many volunteer
experiences have taught me the value of organization
and the importance of listening; to recognize
those things we have in common and to respect
our differences. The battles I have fought on
behalf of tenants, students and working people
demonstrate what individuals can accomplish through
collective action. From these struggles I have
learned how to bring diverse constituencies together
to collaborate in finding solutions to problems.
I am running for the City Council because I want
to bring my skills and insights to city government
- to continue to work for the people and families
of our community. I pledge to give 100% of myself
to being your representative in the City Council.
