I was born in
Trieste, Italy and emigrated to the US with my
grandmother and sister at the age of seven. My
subsequent activity in the civil rights, antiwar and
feminist movements in New York coupled with twelve
years of work in Latin America, solidified an innate
passion for social justice. I studied International
affairs because I’m convinced that every citizen
must be concerned about the kind of “globalization”
that will be adapted since our children’s lives will
be molded by it. This is especially true in New
York, one of the most important centers of corporate
globalization.
In the City Council I will fight for:
- The DEMOCRATIZATION of Trade Agreements by
demanding equal representation for civil society.
Currently, global organs like WTO, GATT, NAFTA and
FTAA are negotiated by multinational corporations,
the citizenry is excluded;
- Transparency - The instruments of “globalization”
and their controlling bodies (courts) function in
secrecy. This practice is antithetical to democracy.
To prepare our children for participation in
democratic civil globalization, I support:
- Upgrading education so that our children will be on
a par with the children of other industrialized
nations — A level playing field, democratized school
financing, an end to “one size fits all” testing, no
privatization, no vouchers;
I will support:
- Repeal of the Rockefeller Drug Laws;
- Patrols that include police who come from the
community. An end to the 24-hour rule. Drug and
alcohol testing of all police involved in shootings;
- Civilian review boards, and “zero tolerance” of
racial profiling;
- Gradual reversal of medical care privatization
(The profit motive in health care emphasizes
high-cost “cure” over low-cost prevention);
- Universal Health Insurance;
- Sufficient, inexpensive, and appropriate childcare
for working mothers;
- Protection for the environment;
- Work to construct new subway routes linking New
York communities without forcing riders to pass
through Manhattan.
