The residents, under the banner of the
Forest Hills Action League, which I founded 2
years ago with Mrs. Chwat, have taken to the streets
of our community in vigils, marches, and silent
protests to push our elected officials to respond
to the “Voice of the People.”
My 29th Council District in Queens is hurting
in many areas, Queens Boulevard, the Killer Highway
(to date 74 deaths and thousands severely injured
pedestrians); rats; garbage removal is a constant
battle; Forest Hills Library Branch violates 10-year
ADA compliance and our library should be brought
up to par with all other 63 branches in the Queens
Library System. Lack of middle income housing;
the runaway conversion of old private houses is
splitting our communities in bickering and complaints.
Hurtful to the community are subway changes and
the closing of token booths. Also lack of enforcement
by the police, as well as lack of traffic controls
on Queens Boulevard. Our parks have been neglected
and there are no cultural and educational facilities
in our area. Sanitation must be taken to task
for the lack of trucks and area coverage.
There is much to be done on our City Council.
First and foremost I will listen to my constituents.
I will work quietly and diligently on their behalf
to re-engineer Queens Boulevard by reducing lanes,
widen center lanes, introduce speed cameras; reduce
the number students in classrooms, increase schools,
have professional and adequate teachers and pay
them enough to stop the teacher drain to the suburbs.
