Well into my second year as a member of the City Council, I am working hard to meet the challenges of this office: enacting responsible legislation that supports the agenda that I pledged to advance - ensuring the well being of our residents, improving the education of our children, creating and maintaining decent, affordable housing and providing opportunities for us all to have an acceptable standard of living; and assisting individual constituents and organizations with a large variety of problems and concerns.
I continue to champion the cause of public education. In May I walked 150 miles from Manhattan to Albany to emphasize to our State government that our children deserve the best possible education and this value must be reflected in our State budget. I was joined along the way by many different people who know that educating our children is the only way to ensure our future.
Working with people from so many walks of life, the need to expand opportunities to share information and develop understanding of the issues that affect them becomes ever clearer to me. Information empowers us to effectively participate in public discourse and make good decisions.
To this end, I have made certain that my newsletters convey real information about city government and its impact on our communities. I have conducted many town hall meetings this spring, allowing my staff and I to focus our attention on the particular concerns of each of the diverse communities that comprise our council district. If constituents couldn’t join us in their neighborhood, there was ample opportunity to meet in another.
I am both humbled and proud that I continue to be so warmly welcomed throughout our district. I believe this is because I truly respect you and share your concerns. I have kept my promises to you and will continue to do so. I hope that you agree and will vote for me on September 9th.
