I believe that public servants should be effective, just, creative and accessible. In this regard I offer my record as an activist and leader of the NYC Council. As Deputy Majority Leader my efforts and accomplishments have been first and foremost on behalf of my district. However I have also been effective citywide.
-I remain an effective voice for affordable housing, successfully rallying with tenants in Albany for the passage of tax forgiveness legislation to allow HDFC residents to retain ownership of their buildings, repeal of vacancy decontrol and the ERSTADT law.
-Aggressively continued my 13 year fight for the successful exoneration of the the wrongfully accused "Central Park Five" and sponsored legislation calling for videotaped interrogations to help prevent cases like this from happening again.
-Fought against the Mayor’s proposed educational cuts in the Council as well as in public demonstrations including one at City Hall where myself and others were arrested for acts of civil disobedience.
-Led the charge against high infant mortality rates and obtained $5 million in funding to address this problem in Harlem and citywide. Primary sponsor of childhood lead poisoning prevention bill.
I have had many significant bills passed into law like the living wage bill, access to training and education bill and human rights laws.
