1. What is the most important issue in the city you would address if elected?
While mayoral control of education was an excellent initiative of the current administration, the failure to properly implement it will lead to an educational decline in our City. The current method of "scripted" or directed education has deprived educators and teachers of their discretion and creativity in the classroom which is vital to our children’s emotional and mental growth. The current system of teaching to a particular test or manipulating the eligibility of students taking a particular test, solely to improve test scores, is not only disingenuous but will have a long-term detrimental effect on our educational system. We must return control of education to our principals, teachers and parents if we are to sustain long term educational benefits.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Over-development is destroying the quality of life in our outer borough residential communities. "Big box" retail development, massive commercial intrusions like the proposed NASCAR site on Staten Island, combined with the "laissez-faire" attitude by the Buildings Department concerning the proliferation of higher density residential structures in our one and two family zoned communities is creating an environmental and social crisis. Borough-wide down zoning with an immediate moratorium on non-conforming construction is necessary to preserve our quality of life.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I am a life-long resident of New York City, married for 38 years to my wife and companion Margaret, a retired New York City School Teacher. Our two children Guy and Eve work and reside in our City. I have extensive hands on experience in both City and State Government and have been continuously active in civic, community and charitable organizations. My leadership experience and my military, governmental and professional training have provided me with the confidence, knowledge and skills to lead our great city.
