1. What is the most important issue in Council District 41 you would address if elected?
The most pressing issue in the 41st District is by far the HIV/AIDS epidemic. 40% of all new cases of people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS come from minority communities. The New York City Council is not doing enough about the health crisis in our community. The Council’s Health Committee has no official policy or plan of action on dealing with this health crisis. Many people who are diagnosed with HIV/AIDS are in need of affordable housing adequate health care and other services. At the present time the General Welfare Committee, not the Health Committee has legislative oversight on the New York City Council’s policy on HIV/AIDS.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
High Impact Policing strategy used by the NYPD has caused an increase in the number of police brutality reports in the 41st District. Hundreds of young men in our community are having their constitutional rights violated daily. Minorities make up only approximately 38% of the overall population, but they make up 75% of New York states prison population. This 75% comes from only 7 minority communities. It’s time to change this trend. If elected to the New York City Council, I pledge to hold the New York City Police Department and ALL city agencies accountable to the people of the community. I will also create and increase educational, economic, and cultural programs to serve as alternatives to crime for our youth.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I have been a strong and steady voice for the people of my community for over 37 years. Experienced and Qualified to deliver strong and effective leadership to the 167,000 residents of the 41st Council District. As Councilwoman, I will use my experience to get our neighborhoods their fair share of services and improvements in the City Budget.
