1. What is the most important issue in Council District 20 you would address if elected?
As president of my civic association, I am fighting to protect our quality of life and to stop overdevelopment. That's why I am the only candidate who has not solicited or accepted developers' campaign contributions. Leading my tenants association, I successfully defeated service cutbacks and rent overcharges for my building. As your Councilmember, I'll use my years of experience to protect affordable housing for our community and fight reckless overdevelopment.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
As a former scientist and cancer researcher, and the only health expert in the City Council, I will lead the Council in creating affordable health care that meets the needs of everyone in our community. I am especially concerned with the pandemic obesity in our schoolchildren, and will make sure that healthier school lunches are served and that our gym classes are well-financed. I am also committed to protecting our seniors from devastating cutbacks and making sure that seniors are always treated with dignity and respect. Education is another top priority for me. As a graduate of New York public schools and a teacher at Queens College for 15 years, I'll fight to ensure our children receive the same quality education I was so fortunate to receive.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
In this time of economic crisis, we need a Councilmember who knows how to create new jobs, diversity our financial base, and make our limited budget go as far as possible to satisfying our needs. I'm not promising a bunch of unrealistic spending the City can't really afford. What I pledge, to quote President Obama, is to "turn hope into reality, promises into fulfillments, and words into action."
