1. What is the most important issue in Council District 20 you would address if elected?
The current education system needs reform. Mayoral control lacks community and parental involvement, keeping those most invested in the system locked out. Parents need more power in the system and Community Education Councils need more funding. Also, school evaluation standards are constantly changing, meaning there is no gauge for progress. There needs to be a solid standard for evaluation enforced by an independent body within our government to keep tabs on schools.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Transportation is not just transportation. It's about commerce, energy, and the environment. It's about getting to work, going on vacation, personal mobility - it's about our quality of life. The MTA needs to focus on using better technology to make our infrastructure more efficient. We also need more bus service, not less. Along with transportation, housing is another basic need of New Yorkers that needs to be addressed. We must work to foster a more integrated city and encourage or require developers to include affordable housing in all their projects. Too many New Yorkers spend too much of their income just to have a roof over their head; we can do better.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I have many new, innovative ideas that I am ready to fight for in the City Council. For too long, city officials have been tied to the same old ways of doing business. These modern, difficult times call for better answers. I have made a career of solving tough problems and I want to bring that expertise to the City Council. Together, we can make New York a better place to live.
