1. What is the most important issue in the city you would address if elected?

New Yorkers need a strong, independent leader in City government who will fight for our neighborhoods and families. In a time of economic crisis, we must help those who cannot help themselves. As Public Advocate, I will be an advocate for New York City children; the poor and vulnerable; and the underserved and unseen residents whose voices City Hall too often ignores. New Yorkers who do not have a lobbyist or who are not a part of a special interest group can and should have a champion in the Public Advocate. These are the people who keep New York City running, yet these are the people who need an advocate most.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

With two children in New York City public schools, I understand the importance of a quality education. As Public Advocate, I will fight to reduce class size, make schools safer, and prevent classroom funding cuts. I will also work to make sure New Yorkers in every neighborhood have hospitals that are open and ready for business.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

My wife Chirlane McCray and I chose to live and raise our two children here because New York City is a vibrant and diverse community where what makes you different is what makes you special. But too often, City Hall does not hear the voices of the people, neighborhoods do not get the support they need, and the voices of the rich and powerful drown out those of everyone else. The role I played during the term limits fight is the role I will play as Public Advocate: organizing and empowering communities to stand up to the mayor when he is wrong. I will work to restore this vision of New York City, where we value different cultures, communities, and points of view.
