I am running for office to legalize marijuana.
Last year there were over 63,000 arrests in New
York City for marijuana possession. That’s 100
times the arrest rate of a mere 600 per year under
mayors David Dinkins and Ed Koch. In addition to
fines, probation and even jail time, young people
face difficulties finding a job and lose Federal
financial aid for college.
Many New Yorkers know friends, family and
co-workers who have been badly hurt by Mayor
Giuliani’s police-state law enforcement policies.
We need a Borough President who is not afraid to
speak out against this injustice.
I am also running to empower urban youth. I
encourage young people to get involved in politics
not simply by voting but by running for office.
Urban youth need to get their voices directly into
the political debate, bringing their own
experiences and ideas to the table. We need
leadership ready to represent.
Finally, I am running to improve education by
expanding choice within the public school system.
Midwood, Murrow, Dewey, Hunter, Stuyvesant, Bronx
Science and Brooklyn Tech are all examples of New
York City public schools that work. What they all
have in common is choice — schools selecting
students and students making the final decision
where to attend. Choice allows for diversity, and
diversity creates academic success.
I am a 33-year-old software developer and native
New Yorker. I grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn and
attended Midwood H.S. After graduating from
Princeton University in 1989, I moved to the Upper
West Side where I still live today.
I never forgot my roots and never sold out to
corporate America. I refuse to drug test,
sacrificing many career goals to free my voice to
speak the truth. For the past five years I have
run Legalize (www.legalize.com), a 5000-member
national organization empowering ordinary
Americans to speak out to legalize marijuana.
