Borough President Fields has worked tirelessly
to implement her vision for “One Manhattan”,
a Borough that provides opportunities for all.
She has continued her mission of bringing people
together from every community, uniting New Yorkers
of different backgrounds and perspectives, resolving
conflicts and finding common ground. The New York
Times aptly described her as “a consensus
builder” in their 1997 endorsement.
- Education: Fields visited most of Manhattan’s
public schools and saw overcrowding and crumbling
classrooms. She joined the lawsuit to force
the state to give the city its fair share of
education funds. She allocated millions of dollars
to build libraries, science and computer labs,
and playgrounds; and forged public/private partnerships.
She convened annual parent conventions.
- Seniors: She had legislation introduced to
build affordable assisted living facilities,
and worked to raise the income eligibility of
SCRIE, which provides rent relief to seniors.
She is working to build adult social day care
centers in each community board district.
- Housing: She issued a report recommending
a $200 million trust fund to build affordable
housing, and allocated millions of dollars to
build an affordable housing/charter school development.
She established a Mitchell-Lama Task Force to
protect our existing stock of affordable housing.
- Economic development: She delivered 17,000
postcards to the MTA, saying, “yes we can
build a Second Avenue subway.” They have
now begun to make it a reality. On the site
of the westside railyards, she is proposing
a development plan with affordable housing,
retail, and commercial space. She created a
banking development district to bring a bank
to an underserved neighborhood in Harlem.
- Health: She allocated $1.1 million for the
borough’s first “lead-free safe house”
in Washington Heights, where families live rent-free
while dangerous lead is removed from their apartments.
She led the fight to save community health clinics.
With your support, Borough President Fields
can continue to create a great place to live
and work for all Manhattanites.
