1. What is the most important issue in Council District 1 you would address if elected?
The #1 in NYC is housing. I will work with government, community, & industry to preserve affordable housing. Development should not push out those who build our communities. I can fix the housing crisis. I will fight to strengthen rent control & stabilization laws, repeal Urstadt and vacancy decontrol & strengthen code enforcement. When developers get government subsidies & waivers, they must provide benefits to our communities. I will work hard to ensure that government resources & programs benefit residents.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
On education, I will increase & strengthen parental involvement. The Community Education Councils need more authority to make the DOE accountable. I will work to eliminate overcrowding & reduce class size. We must pro-actively identify sites & create new schools. I am committed to reduced class sizes. I care about labor & employment issues. We must support small businesses & living wages for working families, and review the Chinatown/LES Empire Zone & boost its impact. I can bring private & public together on jobs for residents, with fair wages & benefits.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I have worked in this community for 30+ years, recently with Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE), in advocacy & community organizing. I fought to preserve & create affordable housing; better access to services; equal opportunity for immigrants & working families. I served on non-profit boards: Chair of NY Immigration Coalition, board of Association for Neighborhood & Housing Development. Founding member - Chinatown Partnership Local Development Corp (CPLDC) & vice-chair. I was a member of Community Board's 1 & 3, and elected to Democratic State Committee 1986 - 1990. I have the background, local knowledge, & leadership experience to be an active voice for district 1.
