1. What is the most important issue in Council District 1 you would address if elected?
I believe our community needs effective, transparent representation at City Hall. We will never realize progress on affordable housing, good public schools and public transportation until we have a councilmember with the skills and experience to get results. I will never put my career ahead of the concerns of the District, nor will I ever seek to overturn the will of the voters to self servingly extend my own term. I will return the kind of integrity and effectiveness that our communities have been missing for the last 8 years.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
I will focus every day on expanding affordable housing without giving in to rampant overdevelopment, ensuring that every child in our community has access to a great local public school and keeping our streets and subways moving so that our local businesses can thrive. Council District 1 is the most dynamic place on earth, I'll fight to keep its character and improve our quality of life.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
I am a progressive Democrat committed to real change. While I agree with my opponents on many issues, I believe my record of public service in our neighborhoods since 1981, as a Civil Rights and Environmental Health Attorney, a Firefighter and Police Officer has always been about achieving concrete results on the quality of life of our District. Whether it's fighting in court for safe public schools, walking the night beat or responding on 9/11, I've been working to keep our community safe and livable for decades.
In the City Council, I'll be our neighborhoods progressive voice to get the change we need.
