1. What is the most important issue in Council District 1 you would address if elected?
Livability and affordability; economic development and rebuilding with Livability First, which assures police, fire, and health services-with my ambulance upgrade plan; enforces my noise and air laws; continues my historic preservation success; implements community traffic proposals; builds on my work creating new schools; preserves and produces affordable housing, including senior housing, using the two Housing Trust Funds I created, ensures affordable Arts space.
2. What other important issues would you address if elected?
Expediting progress at the World Trade Center site. The Memorial must open on time; plans must proceed on schedule, while protecting quality of life; the Performing Arts Center remains alive; a bus and traffic plan must be implemented. Though the State excluded the Council from any authority at the site, the committee I chair by shining a spotlight on proceedings, has already assured: inclusion of affordable housing residents and small business in aid programs; an independent environmental assessment; and progress in negotiations.
3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?
Schools, parks, senior centers facilities and programs thrive in every part of our district because I listen to and partner with residents in all neighborhoods, and forge consensus among people with strong and divergent views. My extensive legislative record (prime/co-sponsored over 60 bills) includes protecting students from harassment, affordable housing, reducing diesel pollution, noise controls, and strengthening construction safety. I have also created initiatives which became national models: free grab bars for seniors, the Young Sailors Program, the Hepatitis B Initiative and shelter beds for homeless teenagers.
